The Police Department provides 24 hour a day service within the town
limits. It also provides a 12 hour communications center that dispatches
the Fire Department, the Police Department, and the Public Works
Department seven days a week from 7am - 7pm.
The Tryon Police Department maintains mutual aid agreements with the
Polk County Sheriffs Office, Columbus and Saluda Police
Departments. We are staffed by eight full-time officers including the
Chief, three reserve officers and house the town Communications Center.

The Tryon Fire Department provides fire protection services. A paid
Chief is supplemented with volunteer officers and firefighters. The area
served by the department includes the Town of Tryon, Tryon Township and
the northern portion of Greenville County, South Carolina around Lake
Lanier.
The department maintains mutual aid agreements with all Polk County Fire
Departments and Landrum Fire Department in South Carolina. Tryon Fire
Department maintains a maintenance program for its 200 plus hydrants.
The department also provides fire inspections to businesses by a N.C.
State Certified Fire Inspector. The department presently holds a Class 5
rating with the Insurance Service Office (ISO).
Tryon Communications is the
citizen's gateway to all town services, including Police, Fire, Public Works,
and Administrative Staff. Communications is normally staffed seven days a
week, from 7am - 7pm. After 7pm, all calls to
Tryon will be routed either to an answering service (for Public Works) or the Polk County
911 Center (for Police/Fire). In the case of inclement weather or other incidents,
Communications will go to 24-hour status and will be manned around the
clock.
Tryon
Communications has the ability to operate on nineteen different radio frequencies and has
radio contact with the Polk, Rutherford and Henderson County Sheriffs Offices, other local police
departments including Landrum, South Carolina and also the Fire Departments,
Emergency Medical Services and Rescue Squad for Polk County.
Communications has access to the State Bureau of Investigations'
Division of Criminal Information (D.C.I.) network, which allows the dispatchers
on duty to obtain information on vehicle registration, drivers license
information, wanted & missing persons, stolen vehicles/guns/property, and
criminal history information.
The Communications Center uses a computerized call
log system by Southern Software. Currently, there are two full-time
Dispatchers for the Department: Blake Arledge and Ann Gibbs. The full time employees are supplemented by
the Reserve Dispatch unit, who fill in when needed for sick time or vacation,
they are: Theda Rickman, Susan Blanton, Tim Wright, Scott Lindsey, and J.J.
Sauve.
We offer a unique service to the
businesses located here, our emergency contact notification system provides
information on all shops and stores in town and who to contact in the event of
an emergency. We encourage all
new businesses to contact us and provide us with this information, it is kept
confidential.
The Tryon Communications Center is available to assist our citizens with any concerns or
problems.
The Polk County EMS offices are located behind St. Luke's Hospital in
Columbus. First responders are available for call in Tryon through the
Tryon Fire Department 24 hours a day.
The Sanitation Department provides
town residents and businesses with curbside pickup from containers no
larger than 32 gallons, once a week for residents and five days per week
for businesses. All garbage and other household waste must be placed in
sealed containers for pickup.
Bulk Containers or materials such as
appliances or other large items will be picked up upon request. Please
contact Town Hall for information regarding collection on your street.
Debris (leaves, brush, white goods, construction materials) collection
will take place on Mondays and Friday on a call-in basis. Schedule
a pick-up by contacting the Town Hall or by sending in a request via
our online form. Please do not ask for special (other day) pickups of
these items.
Business
collection begins at 6AM, Residential begins at 7AM.
Regular pickup includes:
household garbage and trash, carpet, upholstered furniture, plastic,
bedding, empty paint cans. Includes all paper products with
moisture barriers such as milk and ice cream cartons or frozen food
packages. Televisions.
Regular pickup does not
include: Liquids, Pesticides, insecticides, hazardous materials, tires or shingles.
The department will not remove:
building materials, dirt, tree stumps,
batteries of any type or any material that is determined to be
poisonous, highly flammable, radioactive, toxic or explosive.
Information regarding disposal of these items may be obtained by calling
the Health Department or County Landfill.
Yard waste: Items that may be put out for collection include
grass clippings and leaves in bags. Brush and limbs may be placed
at curbside cut into lengths no longer than 8 feet. All debris
created by the clearing of a lot for construction purposes or debris
removal by a contractor must be removed by the owner. Removal of
spoil from large tree removal, clearing of lots or other large areas by
the property owner, requires advance arrangements for pickup and a per
load fee will be charged. Amounts in excess of one truckload will
incur additional charges. Residents should contact Town Hall
concerning yard waste collection.
RECYCLING
The Town of Tryon operates
curbside recycling every Wednesday to all
residents. The Town accepts aluminum, all colors of glass and paper.
Residents are asked to separate the different recyclables prior to
pickup. The town accepts only plastics nos. 1 & 2. Cardboard
cartons are to be flattened. Newspapers, magazines, telephone
books, catalogs, etc are to be tied in bundles, bagged or in some
container. No single bundle is to exceed 40 pounds in weight.
No paper products with
moisture barriers such as milk or ice cream cartons. These items
are included in regular garbage pickup.
The town offers recycling bins
to in-town residents. Please come in person to the Town Hall and ask to
speak with Pam Justice.
STREET MAINTENANCE
The Town maintains approximately
16 miles of municipal streets within the town limits. Potholes, missing
street signs and other necessary repairs should be reported to the Town
Hall or let us know online via our work order
form.
The NC Department of Transportation maintains all the major roads and
state system streets. Repairs should be reported directly to the NC
Department of Transportation maintenance shop at 894-8980.
UTILITY SERVICES
The Town provides water and/or
sewer service to residents where available. Utility deposits for water
and/or sewer service are required before service begins. For additional
information or assistance you may call Tryon Town Hall. Requests for new
service should be made in person at the Town Hall Located at 301 North
Trade Street.
Water and/or sewer bills are normally mailed on or around the 20th day
of the following month. Payments should be made at the Town Hall or
mailed to the Town of Tryon: 301 North Trade Street, Tryon, NC 28782.
After hours and weekend emergencies, such as a water main break, should
be reported to the Tryon Police Department at 859-9195.

The Town of Tryon maintains many
acres of parks and recreational facilities consisting of Harmon Field,
Woodland Park, The Green Corner and Rogers Park. Harmon Field consists
of 36 acres of ball fields, soccer fields, a quarter mile track, tennis
courts, equestrian facilities including rings and stables, a playground,
a picnic shelter and a cabin for special events. The Harmon Field Board
of Supervisors oversees all activities at Harmon Field and meets the
first Tuesday of each month.
Woodland Park is approximately 10 acres of natural park located just off
Chestnut Street and provides hiking trails through unspoiled forest.
The Green Corner is a small park located at the corner of Melrose Avenue
and Lyncourt Drive and is often used for art exhibits and weddings.
Rogers Park is located on West Howard Street and features a 200 seat
amphitheater with reception and gathering areas. A small creek and short
trails meander through the park. Includes rock walls and is
beautifully landscaped with native plants.
